Happy Belated Birthday to my bestie – Lauren! Lauren and I have been friends for 18 years and even though we haven’t lived in the same city since high school, we were able to celebrate her birthday together this past weekend with French 75s!

The French 75 cocktail is made of gin, champagne, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Of course I am not going to make the traditional French 75 for this month’s Lyrics & Libations; I’m shaking things up (bad cocktail pun intended #noshameinmygame) with Strawberry Rhubarb Gin from Norseman Distillery in Minneapolis.

Lauren introduced me to Norseman earlier this year and I was thrilled to find their seasonal strawberry rhubarb gin! Strawberry rhubarb always reminds me of summers at my cabin. Once a year my mom would make a strawberry rhubarb pie and we would eat it out on the deck overlooking the lake. Living in Chicago makes it difficult to get up north as often as I would like, but this cocktail is making me feel like I am there.

Today I am bottling that feeling up in a glass and sipping on a Strawberry Rhubarb French 75 while listening to Nina Simone sing ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’.

Pat has been on a Nina Simone kick ever since watching her documentary on Netflix. To me her voice is quite sultry and mysterious, which is similar to how I feel about the French language. I never learned French and have always been quite intrigued by it.

I love listening to music in other languages, but French especially. It feels peaceful and romantic and it is the perfect way to wind down after a long day.

Cheers to the first full day of summer, to bright and refreshing flavors, to eating strawberry rhubarb pie on the deck, and to you!

Happy Thursday friends – I hope your summer is off to a fabulous start! And thank you, as always, for being here.
